Studio Notes

Selected writings on sumi-e, ensō, breath, paper, memory, and contemporary ink practice.

These notes bring together short reflections from Hilmi Şimşek’s studio practice. They trace the relationship between brush, body, breath, silence, and the inner condition of the artist before, during, and after the gesture.

Rather than functioning as formal essays, these writings open a quieter space around the works: a space where material, memory, restraint, and presence can be read together.

Sequence of Studio Reflections

This sequence brings together fourteen connected studio reflections written between April and May 2026. Together, they trace Hilmi Şimşek’s understanding of sumi-e through emptiness, mushin, paper, ink, brush, intention, body, breath, ma, gratitude, and artistic presence.
